The Fruit of Consistency in the Eyes of a Team Leader

by: Sheena Agudo, August 23, 2019

What is recruitment for you?

“Recruitment is matching the right candidate with the right company” said by Ms. Cris Amper, a Team Leader of the LGC’s IT Team, in an interview last Thursday (August 23, 2019).

She has been in the industry for more than 3 years already, and according to her this job is surprisingly amazing, especially when she is encountering a lot of good candidates who were paid less than what they were worth “some were grossly underpaid” she said.

She make sure that she always do her best to help those candidates, “I can help those candidates improve their quality of life by placing them with companies that know their worth, that’s what makes it special.” (Cris Amper, 2019)

What are the challenges that brought you to this position? (Team Leader)

Nothing is more effective than consistency when it comes to making your company, or your performance, stand out. For some people consistency is really hard to achieve. That is why in Ms. Cris Amper’s point of view, consistency is the biggest challenge in IT Recruitment.

“Here in IT, placing a candidate consistently is difficult, doable but difficult” she said.

There is massive competition within the IT industry. Good candidates often have several offers on the table. With the options that they have, it’s really, sometimes, just luck if the candidate chooses to join the company you endorsed him to. It really depends on a lot of factors and there are things that you cannot control. She also experienced a lot of declined offers, and to her, it can get really frustrating. This goes with the territory. You just have to learn to move forward and start over and over.

“I guess, the fact that I was able to do this consistently is what brought me here.”(Cris Amper, 2019)
You cannot achieve your goals in life without experiencing challenges. It is really amazing to hear those words from a Team Leader. Knowing she also experienced lots of rejections and disappointments in her job, but still she pushed so hard and kept being consistent. Now, hearing the fruits of her labor, she is now the team leader of the IT Recruitment Team merely because of her consistency.

How do you motivate your people?

Your people may have all the expertise in the world but, if they’re not motivated, it’s unlikely that they’ll achieve their true potential.

For Ms. Cris Amper, motivating her people is quite tricky.

“It’s always a question of what to use- Carrot or the stick? Reward or punishment? I guess, you have to know what works for each one” she said.

Probably in her statement about motivating your people, every team member is different, and will likely have different motivators. So, it’s important to get to know your people, discover what motivates them, and find a good mixture of extrinsic and intrinsic motivators, so that you can motivate them successfully.

Ms. Cris Amper also said in our interview that she uses both the reward and punishment as a way of motivating her team, “I find that this is what works for my team” she said. Within her team, they have bonuses for getting first deal of the month, biggest deal of the month and most number of interviews as well as penalties for tardiness.

In doing this kind of motivation, Ms. Cris Amper saw a huge improvement on her team’s level of motivation and commitment. To her, this is not the perfect system, but as long as it works for their progress, there is nothing wrong with her doing it.

How do you see yourself in 5 years?

“I’d probably be heading an LGC office somewhere. *hint* *hint* *Ahem*” she said this with a smile on her face. Hearing her story on what are the challenges she experienced in her job and how did she surpassed it, I would not even wonder if one day she will achieve this goal in her life.

Will you recommend this career to all the people who are currently in search for their luck out there? And what advice can you give to the people who are just starting in this career?

When I asked her this question, she proudly said YES. “Yes. It is a rewarding job” she said.

“Be present and be committed. In order for you to become good at something, you have to be present. Go to work everyday, commit to the company, to your work.” (Cris Amper, 2019)

If you really love what you do, just keep on moving forward and everything else that is rewarding will follow. In the talk with Ms. Cris Amper, she taught us how to pursue our goals in life by being consistent, and there is nothing more rewarding than enjoying the fruits of your hard work.
